The Buenos Aires Marathon: Latin America’s fastest race

The Queen of the Plata, the second largest city in South America, hosts the continent’s largest marathon! Argentinians aren’t only passionate about tango and football; they’re also avid runners! Since the early 1900s, a marathon has been held in the heart of Buenos Aires, initially attracting around thirty participants. In stark contrast, today nearly 8,000 people take part in the race at the end of September. During the austral spring, conditions are perfect for running and enjoying the banks of the Rio de la Plata.

The Buenos Aires Marathon has faced its share of challenges but gained momentum in the 1980s when running became more popular. By 1984, it was recognized as the “national marathon”, but it wasn’t until 2003 that Buenos Aires truly made its mark on the global running scene. Over the last seven editions, more than 10,000 runners have participated, including many elite international athletes.

The course is one of the main reasons why this marathon shines internationally, attracting so many participants. It’s an opportunity to explore the most European of South American cities and its emblematic sites. The loop takes runners through the Parque Tres de Febrero, the chic residential district of Palermo, and the Recoleta neighborhood, home to the Opera House, the Teatro Colon, the Obelisco, and the Casa Rosada. Other unique landscapes of Buenos Aires fill the course, such as the Caminito neighborhood with its colorful streets and the Ecological Reserve for migratory birds. Football fans will also appreciate the course passing close to the Boca Juniors stadium. As a world-renowned race, it features a flat course with only a few slight inclines at specific points. Recent editions have introduced a course layout that has been well-received by participants for its straight paths and few sharp turns, enhancing speed.

But at the heart of Argentina, it’s not just about the scenery and the competition! There, the race is celebrated in style! The atmosphere along the route is muy caliente: with dances, songs, live bands, traditional costumes… It’s a true festival crafted by the organizers of the Buenos Aires Marathon. Over a thousand people contribute to the smooth running of the event, making it a success every time!
