The Ljubljana Marathon: A Tradition in Slovenia’s Capital

Since its first edition on October 27, 1996, the Ljubljana Marathon has become a landmark event for Slovenia’s capital. On that day, 673 runners gathered for its inaugural race. Today, more than 20,000 runners line up annually at the marathon’s starting point. Each October, the Ljubljana Marathon transforms the city into a vibrant sporting stage. This event draws not only athletes from neighboring countries such as Italy, Croatia, and Hungary but also visitors from across the globe. 

Ljubljana, the capital and largest city of Slovenia, is known for its diverse architecture, student-friendly atmosphere, and numerous green spaces. Situated near the Alps, the city boasts a rich cultural heritage influenced by various historical periods. From remnants of the Roman era to buildings inspired by Austrian and Napoleonic styles, Ljubljana offers an architectural melting pot that adds a unique dimension to the race.

The number one highlight of this marathon is its course. Starting from the National Theater, the route takes runners through some of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods before they cross the finish line just a few steps from the Congress Square. The proximity to Ljubljana’s landmarks and famous sites makes this marathon a journey right through the heart of Slovenia, allowing participants to experience the city as if on a sightseeing tour.

The Ljubljana Marathon course is also renowned for its ease and speed. The route features no elevation changes, making it particularly accessible for marathoners of all levels, from amateurs to seasoned athletes.
