Prague Marathon: An Enchanting Route

Watch out for the portcullis! Charles IV might have decided to make a comeback. No chance, as his era dates back to the Holy Roman Empire, a time when running in Prague was not yet a leisure activity. The people of Prague had to wait nearly 1000 years to experience their first marathon.

It wasn’t until 1995 that the city held its first edition. The decisions were made a year earlier, unsurprisingly, over a large glass of beer, a staple beverage there. Carlo Capalbo, the founder, didn’t yet know that sitting beside Gelindo Bordin, the 1988 Seoul Marathon winner, would lead to the creation of one of Europe’s most iconic marathons a few months later. Since then, this event has attracted over 15,000 runners from 55 different nationalities, earning its place among Europe’s most renowned marathons.

The Prague Marathon stands out for its exceptional setting. The city, famous for its unique architecture and fascinating history, provides a picturesque backdrop throughout the course. Runners pass by iconic landmarks like the Astronomical Clock and the Church of Our Lady before Týn, located near the Old Town Square. These buildings are uniquely baroque and captivating, whisking minds away through the most obscure movies. Prague is a city famous for its adventurous history and affordable beer! The marathon organizers have truly embraced this. The race stages are mapped out so every runner can relive the era of the Holy Roman Empire.

The Prague Marathon route is a visual delight, but not always kind to the feet, adding to its charm. Climbing the Opys hill, marathoners must be brave to earn the view of the castle. The streets are authentic but cobbled, from the ramparts to the portcullis of the bridge named after a single emperor. The numerous bridges of the “city of a hundred spires” also play a significant role. Ten crossings over six of the famous bridges are planned during the race. Kilometer after kilometer, opinions vary: some runners prefer the serenity of the  Vltava riverbanks, while others are captivated by the ancient charm of Prague’s streets. Whether it’s the history, the beauty of the scenery, or the physical challenge, the Prague Marathon offers an unforgettable experience. Every stride is a leap into a fascinating journey through time and space, making this race an unmissable event.

KEY POINTS

  • Crossing six of the city’s bridges brings a magical touch to the race. Runners feel like they’re slicing through the depths of the city. It’s not just six crossings offered, but ten! There’s no chance participants will miss out on the scenery.
  • The course remains fairly flat despite sections with cobblestones, which aren’t to everyone’s taste. The tram tracks and natural gradients of the city aren’t the runners’ best friends either.
  • The event is held in the spring, often in April, when the weather in Prague is pleasant for running.
