Paris Marathon 2025: Key Figures of a Record-Breaking Edition Marathon
Nothing is impossible for Paris. As the final tally comes in, the Paris Marathon stands tall. On Sunday, April 13, 2025, 56,950 runners and the French capital made history. Setting a new world record for participation, Paris has overtaken New York. Last Sunday, the city’s streets echoed with the enthusiasm of participants from around the globe, making the Paris Marathon the largest marathon in the world.
| Paris overtakes New York
The previous record (55,529 runners) was set in November 2024 during the 53rd edition of the legendary New York Marathon. On Sunday, April 13, 2025, the 56,950 runners who participated in the Paris Marathon broke this participation record. This achievement further cements the event’s status among the world’s top marathons. This new record highlights a spectacular Sunday in the streets of Paris, filled with solidarity, popular fervor, and an electric atmosphere. This 48th Paris Marathon was indeed an edition of records.
| An edition of all records
In addition to the participation record, the event organized by A.S.O. set several other records. In the 2025 edition, 51% of the runners were first-timers on this iconic distance. A remarkable figure, born from a balance of ambition and determination. Observers likely noticed another significant trend: a strong female presence with a new record of 31% female participation compared to 28% in 2024. This year, participants pushed beyond their limits, with 55,499 crossing the finish line on Avenue Foch, marking 97.4% of finishers. Finishing the race deservedly earned them their medals.
| An international dimension
At the start of the Paris Marathon, 33% of participants were from abroad. This further highlights the international appeal of the Paris Marathon. The City of Light continues to enchant runners worldwide. Kenya showcased its talent with Bernard Biwott’s victory. In the men’s elite race, he finished the fastest in 2:05:25. Among the women, Ethiopia celebrated with Bedatu Hirpa’s triumph in 2:20:45. Once again, the Paris Marathon attracted an elite, high-caliber field, particularly from African athletes, confirming its place among the major events on the international calendar.
Among the pack, the median time was 4:06:54, and 2,077 runners finished in under 3 hours – showcasing the dedication and effort of the participants.
| An unprecedented wave of solidarity
Nearly 5 million euros were raised by 6,000 runners, or rather heroically, during the Paris Marathon, setting a new fundraising record for over 300 charities. Whether for health, education, veteran support, or environmental causes, the commitment of these charitable runners deserves praise. Some, like Stanislas, 20, a Paris Marathon finisher, chose to support a charity on their first attempt at the distance. Each step they took proved one can run for oneself while running for others.
It was important to me. I’m very proud to have completed my first marathon in 3:23. The atmosphere was incredible, and the volunteers were amazing.

| Youth is making strides
Step aside, here comes the youth! The marathon is captivating the new generation seeking personal challenges or simply looking for a thrilling sporting adventure. Racing down the Champs-Élysées and through Parisian streets, those under 25 years old comprised over 10% of the participants this year. A growing figure compared to five years ago when they made up just 5%. As for average age, runners had to be younger than 37 years and 4 months to be part of the youngest half of the participants.
